Mathieson, BSC
Gladiator
This
is John Mathieson's first Oscar nomination. Mathieson was also nominated
for an American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Outstanding Achievement
Award for his work on Gladiator.
Mathieson came up through the traditional camera ranks and worked as
an assistant to Gabriel Beristáin for several years. Mathieson
was first recognized for his work on the music video "Peekaboo"
by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Mathieson has conitnued to shoot commercials
and music videos, including the BMW X-5 commericals and Madonna's remake
of "American Pie." He met Ridley Scott through the director's
son Jake, who was at the helm when Mathieson lensed Plunkett &
Macleane in 1999. Mathieson and Ridley Scott not only collaborated
on Gladiator but also on Hannibal. Mathieson's credits
also include Twin Town and Love Is the Devil. His 1995
French film Bye, Bye was awarded France's Legion D'Or. His latest
project is K-Pax.
"I had to maintain a very high standard of craftsmanship,"
says Mathieson. "My approach was to keep the photography as simple
as possible. I would just do what I thought was going to be good in
a given situation. The approach wasn't designed ahead of time. That
was the beast. That was Gladiator."
