Slawomir
Idziak is a native of Poland. His career spans nearly 30 years. Among
his nearly 40 credits is a wide range of films, shot in various countries.
Idziak earned high acclaim for his work with director Krzysztof Kieslowski
on A Short Film About Killing, The Double Life of Veronique and
Three Colors: Blue. His U.S. credits include Gattaca and
Proof of Life. He is also a frequent collaborator with director
Krzysztof Zanussi on such films as Balance, The Year of the Quiet
Sun, The Conductor, the telefilm Pedestrian Subway, to name
a few. Idziak also teaches at many workshops and film schools throughout
the world. This is his first Academy Award nomination.
Black Hawk Down recounts the October 1993 mission of an elite
team of American soldiers air-dropped into Mogadishu to capture the
top lieutenants of a Somalian warlord. When two Black Hawk helicopters
are shot down, the Americans find themselves trapped behind enemy lines
and fighting a desperate battle against hundreds of Somalian troops.
"Everything was carefully staged and prepared. Because this
was war we were recreating, you never knew what might happen, so we
had to be ready."
