Lesnie, ACS won the 1998 Australian Cinematographers Society Award of
Distinction for his work on Doing Time for Patsy Cline, which
also earned him the Australian Film Institute and the Australian Film
Critics awards for Best Cinematography. Lesnie also twice won the ACS
Cinematographer of the Year Award in 1995 for You Seng and in
1996 for Babe. His other feature credits include Babe: Pig
in the City, Fair Game, The Delinquents, Two If by Sea, Spider &
Rose, The Sugar Factory, and the forthcoming Lord of the Rings
sequels, The Two Towers and The Return of the King, slated
for release in 2002 and 2003, respectively. He also lensed the telefilms
The Saint in Australia, The Rainbow Warrior Conspiracy and the
miniseries Melba and Bodyline. The Lord of the Rings
has earned Lesnie his first nominations for both an ASC Outstanding
Achievement Award and an Oscar.
In The Lord of the Rings, sorcerers, ogres and a timid hobbit
from an ancient world undertake a perilous mission. Under the guidance
of the wizard, the hobbit and his companions must return a powerful
ring to the fires in which it was forged before it falls into the hand
of the Dark Lord.
"Most of the major sets were pre-rigged from plans designed
by the chief lighting technician Brian Bansgrove and myself, and all
of the operators and gaffers stayed in regular contact. Many mornings
I had a phone in one hand and a meter in the other."
