The Phantom of
the Opera
The Phantom of the Opera is based on the popular stage musical. The film tells
the story of the mysterious masked Phantom of the Paris Opera House and his
obsession with Christine, a talented young singer. Determined to possess the
girl, the Phantom uses his musical brilliance to further her career.
John Mathieson, BSC came up through the traditional ranks of the camera
crew system. He was first recognized for his outstanding cinematography on
music videos. He is a frequent collaborator with Ridley Scott. Mathieson
has shot the upcoming Kingdom of Heaven, Hannibal, Matchstick Men, and Gladiatorwith the legendary director. The latter film earned Mathieson a BAFTA Film
Award along with nominations for both an ASC Outstanding Achievement Award
and an Academy Award. His 1995 French film Bye, Bye was awarded France’s
Legion D’Or. Matiheson’s credits also include Plunkett & Macleane,
K-PAX, Trauma, and Red Dragon.
