The Aviator
This biography of billionaire Howard Hughes follows his life from the time of
his forays into filmmaking during the late 1920s to his battles with Congress
in the 1940s. The film explores his relationships with Katharine Hepburn and
Ava Gardner, his pioneering efforts in the field of aviation, and the beginnings
of his descent into isolation and mental illness.
Robert Richardson, ASC studied film and art at the Rhode Island School of
Design before earning his master’s degree at AFI. He won an Academy
Award for JFK (1992), and has also earned Oscar nominations for Snow
Falling on Cedars (2000), Born on the Fourth of July (1990), and Platoon (1987).
Richardson received his seventh ASC Outstanding Achievement Award nomination
this year for The Aviator. His credits also include such memorable films
as A Few Good Men, Heaven & Earth, The Horse Whisperer, Casino, Salvador,
Wall Street, The Doors, Natural Born Killers, Nixon, Wag the Dog, and Four
Feathers.
