Pan’s Labyrinth

Guillermo Navarro, ASC, AMCGuillermo Navarro, ASC, AMC was born and raised in Mexico City. He began taking still pictures as a hobby during his early teens and later got his first job as a still photographer on movie sets. He also photographed record album covers and fashion. Navarro moved to London and then France to seek opportunities to work on narrative films as a cinematographer. He shot some documentaries and commercials and segued into narrative filmmaking in 1985 with Love Around the Corner. His body of work includes Cabeza de Vaca, Cronos, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Jackie Brown, Stuart Little, Spy Kids, Hellboy, Zathura: A Space Adventure and Night at the Museum. This is Navarro’s first Academy Award nomination for Pan’s Labyrinth. The film also earned the Golden Frog Award at Camerimage, as well as BAFTA and Independent Spirit Award nominations.

“Every shot was the result of a lot of thought, so there was very little room for spontaneity. We were practically editing in camera, so there was no need for a lot of extra coverage. We want the audience to see things as they happen.”

Following the Spanish Civil War, a young girl captivated by a fairytale comes to believe she is the lost princess of the story. In the wake of her mother’s remarriage to a cruel fascist officer, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) explores a vast stone labyrinth, where she encounters Pan and is given three tasks to perform.
