Sonja Rom
Ice Cream Sundae
The Cinematographer
Sonja Rom was born and raised
in Germany. She graduated from the Berlin Film Academy in 1996 and continued
her education at the American Film Institute (AFI) in 1997. Rom says
she discovered during her student years that cinematography is a creative
outlet that provides opportunities to express oneself using lighting
and composition to create moods and tell stories with images. She credits
Robby Mueller, BVK, Christopher Doyle, Peter Deming and Roger Deakins,
ASC, BSC as early influences in her career.
Rom cites The Deer Hunter,
lensed by Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, as her all-time favorite film. Rom is
rated as a camera operator on the Guild roster. She says her goal is
to continue working with cinematographers whose work she admires.
The Film
Ice Cream Sundae
is about a young woman who is pregnant and has a hard time letting go
of her dreams of an exciting and passionate life. Rom worked closely
with the director to decide on locations and the different moods they
wanted to evoke based on the shot list. The film was produced in 35
mm format, using the skip bleach process to visually accentuate moods
in flashback sequences. Ice Cream Sundae is playing on the festival
circuit and on European television.
