Bruce S. Ready
State of the Artist

The Cinematographer

Bruce S. Ready is a native of Australia, who now calls Los Angeles home. Ready is a first assistant cameraman who regularly works with several “exceptional” cinematographers who specialize in shooting commercials. He is also honing his skills and sharpening his eye as a cinematographer by shooting documentaries, non-fiction-style television programs and occasional independent features.

Ready says that his work as a crew member has taught him protocol for shooting films in the United States, and opportunities perfect his craft and develop his aesthetic taste. His initial training was in fine arts photography, which adds a different dimension to his approach to cinematography.

The Film

State of the Artist is part one of a trilogy written and directed by Maryland filmmaker Ed Sherman. Parts were shot by three different cinematographers. The film is a lighthearted look at the pretensions of the modern day art scene, with a touch of gravitas about the artist’s authentic need to create.

The short film focuses on a struggling artist who replicates the works of Vincent van Gogh after attending an exhibit at the National Gallery. The artist has a life-altering encounter with the master artist himself.
