Jim Matlosz
Oedipus
Jim
Matlosz earned an associate degree in both media studies
and photography, and a bachelor’s degree in communication at William Patterson College. Matlosz says he was particularly
inspired by Pete Kozachik when he worked as an assistant cameraman
on Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas, and Roger
Deakins, ASC, BSC on the set of Martin Scorsese's Kundun.
Matlosz is entering his 16th year in the industry. He first began
working on visual effects motion control, greenscreen/bluescreen,
miniatures, animation, and pyrotechnique shots. He has over 10 years
of experience in commercials. Matlosz spent seven years traveling
the world making IMAX® films, and has photographed several live-action
shorts and independent features.
Oedipus is a stop-motion
film based on a Greek tragedy by Sophocles, which is performed by fresh
vegetables. This is the first time Matlosz collaborated with director
Jason Wishnow. The director wanted the film to feel like a classic
Hollywood CinemaScope film. Matlosz says it was a challenge to create
live-action lighting techniques and a style to make the film feel as
real as possible. Oedipus premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film
Festival. The film has also won several awards, including best cinematography
for a high-def short at HDFEST.
