Surfacing

Richard WongRichard Wong is a native of San Francisco, California, where he studied at the Academy of Art College. A love of films and photography, as well as a need to be creative led Wong to cinematography. He says each of the cameramen he has worked with have inspired and taught him in different ways. Wong’s credits include the pilots Foothooker and As Seen on TV, as well as the shorts Crisis '76, F*ing Hollywood, Judy and LYC. He recently worked as the video engineer on the Emmy® Award-winning comedy Arrested Development. Wong plans to continue to shoot as much as possible with the eventual goal of working full-time as a cinematographer.

Surfacing is a short film about a young woman who is living a deeply conflicted life. The story takes place on a routine day where she continues to peck away at the very slow process of change. Bradley W. Ragland directed, co-wrote and co-edited the film. Mario Margott co-wrote and acted in the film. Wong previously worked with both on several projects at Academy of Art College. Focusing on motivated camera angles and movement to tell the story, Wong envisioned the film to be “very composed and locked off” for most of the film, and handheld and live for the traveling sequence. The film is currently being submitted to various festivals. Ragland and Margott have also finished the script for a feature length version of Surfacing, which they hope to have the opportunity to make.
