Nearly 400 filmgoers attended Local 600's international premiere of our Ninth Annual Film Showcase competition on April 10 at the DGA Theatre in Los Angeles. Taking top honors in this year's competition were:

2005 Short Film ShowcaseMost of the filmmakers were on hand to discuss their work at the reception following the screening. The 12 films covered a variety of genres and made for an eclectic afternoon of viewing.

Additional screenings in cities around the rest of the country will be announced once they are scheduled. ICG partnered with Kodak once again to sponsor the annual event. The event is free and open to the public.

The annual film festival showcases up-and-coming members' work. The competition, open to all ICG members who are not yet rated as Directors of Photography, includes the work of Still Photographers, Film Loaders, Assistants and Operators. This year there were 80 entries.

"The high quality of films submitted each year is heartening for all of us at the Guild who are committed to helping our membership advance their careers," says ICG President Gary Dunham. "This year's films are no exception. There is no doubt that the talent within each of our camera crews is deep and wide-ranging. Our finalists have shown that when the opportunity to move up to director of photography presents itself, they are more than ready to meet the challenge."

A panel of Local 600 cinematographers judges each film. The films, which are required to be 30 minutes or less, are reviewed on the basis of the artistry of the cinematographers and the skill with which they execute the visual grammar of the film.

"The power of this project is that it showcases the tremendous talent in our union," said Local 600 President Gary Dunham. "Year after year, the Guild's Film Showcase helps members live out their dreams and for a lucky few, it helps catapult their careers in the art of filmmaking. There is nothing more powerful than being judged by a jury of your peers."

The competition began 10 years ago as the brainchild of Rob Kositchek, a Local 600 Operator. His goal was to enable young, aspiring members to become full fledged cinematographers through the competition. Contestants create their own short films that showcase their visual talent and skill. The festival recognizes the hard work, dedication and talent of aspiring cinematographers.

Kositchek noted that the event has done much to educate the Hollywood community and the press on the value of cinematography and cinematographers. "The Festival continues to showcase our wonderful and deep pool of talent to the rest of the movie industry," noted Kositchek. "Even after all these years, there's still a lot of ignorance about who and what we are. With so many new and young people in the industry, it's important that they know that there is a resource like the International Cinematographers Guild."

The Short Film Showcase is one of many initiatives sponsored by ICG to help its 6,000 members gain recognition and advance in their careers.
