Chris Squires
Old Love
The Cinematographer
Chris Squires is originally
from Honolulu, Hawaii. An interest in photography led him to cinematography.
He chose to study at Stanford University because of the film department's
strong documentary program. Squires has honed his skills working on
crews led by Haskell Wexler, ASC, Vilmos Zsigmond, ASC, and Caleb Deschanel,
ASC. He has worked as camera and Steadicam operator on such films as
If These Wall Could Talk 2, Mad City, Metro, Copycat, Dangerous Minds
and Forrest Gump. At other times, he perfects his craft by
shooting low budget films as well as commercials and music videos. Squires
has also written a feature script that he would one day love to direct.
The Film
Old Love is based
on the Isaac Bashevis Singer short story about a brief flirtation between
two elderly people that spawns tragedy. Most of the film is confined
to a penthouse apartment, which is one of the reasons that led Squires
to shoot in Super 16 and make 35 mm blowups for festivals.
Squires discussed the film's
look with the director using still photographs, primarily by Andre Kertesz,
as a guide. Squires was very familiar with Singer's work, enabling him
to discuss the "characters and their world beyond what was written
in the script." Old Love has been featured at numerous international
film festivals as well as airing on European television.
