600 Member, Famous Documentarian Long-time Guild member and respected cinematographer David Myers has died. The retired Director of Photography died of natural causes on Aug. 26 in a Northern California hospital after suffering a stroke a week earlier. He was 90.
While his feature-film credits included George Lucas' debut film, THX 1138, and Alan Rudolph's Welcome to L.A., Myers was best-known for his camera work on landmark concert documentaries such as Woodstock, Wattstax, Elvis on Tour, The Last Waltz and The Grateful Dead Movie. Prior to making his mark in concert documentaries, Myers was at the forefront of cinema verite documentary filmmaking in the 1960s. He traveled the world with his camera shooting films for the United Nations and National Geographic – including the Oscar-winning 1972 documentary Marjoe.
"There was nobody who captured the essence of rock 'n' roll and music more than Dave Myers," said longtime friend Mark Fishkin, director of the California Film Institute. “The way he filmed, moving around with the camera on his shoulder, was like a dance.”
Myers is survived by his wife, Barbara, a retired painter; and a sister, Barbara Rahn of Toronto, Canada.
