Local 600 President Steven Poster, ASC and Local 600 Members Discuss Art of Collaboration at UFVA Conference

Members of the International Cinematographers Guild (ICG) will meet with mentors to the next generation of filmmakers on August 8, during the annual University Film and Video Association (UFVA) Conference hosted by the University of North Texas. The conference runs August 6-11. They will discuss the collaborative art of filmmaking.

“No one has ever made a great film or an interesting television program alone,” says ICG President Steven Poster, ASC. “Filmmaking is a uniquely collaborative form of artistic expression. Our mission is to give the hundreds of film school deans and teachers who are gathered here a clear understanding of what it takes to translate scripts into images that tell compelling stories. They carry a heavy burden in preparing the next generation to compete for roles in our very competitive industry.”

Poster will be joined in the discussion by five-time Oscar® nominee Allen Daviau, ASC, and camera operators Paul Babin, SOC and Heather Page. The ICG represents some 6,000 cinematographers and camera crew members in the United States.

Poster’s impressive list of narrative credits includes the feature films Donnie Darko and the soon to be released Southland Tales from director Richard Kelly, Stuart Little 2, Daddy Day Care, Someone to Watch Over Me, Rocky V and Testament. He was nominated for an Emmy last year for his work on Mrs. Harris for HBO. Poster was president of the American Society of Cinematographers in 2002.

Daviau’s Oscar nominations were for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Color Purple, Empire of the Sun, Avalon, and Bugsy. His other memorable credits include Fearlesss, The Falcon and the Snowman and The Astronaut’s Wife. Daviau received the American Society of Cinematographers’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.

Babin has collaborated with Daviau on several films, including Bugsy, Fearless, The Astronaut’s Wife and Van Helsing. His other camera crew credits include True Lies, The River Wild, The Rainmaker, The Ring Two, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zathura, Disturbia and U2 3D.

Page has been working on the TV series Friday Night Lights. Her camera crew credits include the feature films The Green Mile, Armageddon, Corrina Corrina, Seabiscuit, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, the telefilm My Antonia. She is also a board member of the Texas Motion Picture Alliance.
