Local 600 Cooperates with Department of Labor Investigation
In September, seven Local 600 members (appellants) filed complaints with the U.S. Department of Labor seeking to overturn Local 600's elections, which concluded on May 11, 2007. The Department of Labor must investigate such complaints even though they may be without merit. The following language is taken directly from the DOL's web site, describing the duties of the Secretary of Labor.
The Secretary is required to investigate each complaint of a union election violation filed in accordance with the procedure outlined in the paragraphs above.
Local 600's Election Committee originally investigated the protests filed by these seven members and on June 4, concluded they were without merit. On June 9, 2007, Local 600's previous National Executive Board voted to uphold the Election Committee's denial of the protests.
The appellants then appealed to IATSE International President Tom Short, who also rejected their protests on August 2.
These appellants then filed the same protests with the Department of Labor, which will not officially rule on the complaints until mid-November.
