Gary Dunham Wins Local 600 Presidency

Gary Dunham WinsCamera assistant Gary Dunham was elected President Local 600 by a 52.1 percent to 47.8 percent margin, defeating director of photography Stephen Lighthill ASC. The Coalition for a Democratic Union (CDU) slate of candidates headed by Dunham swept most of the key posts giving them a majority of the national Executive Board seats. Based on the tentative results released by Local 600's Election Committee, Saturday, Apr. 24, 30 percent of the eligible members voted.

Academy Award winning cinematographer Haskell Wexler, ASC who ran on the CDU slate was reelected Second National Vice President; Tom Weston won the National Vice President seat; Paul Ferrazzi was elected National Secretary-Treasurer; Gabor Kover becomes the National Assistant Secretary Treasurer; National First Vice President Rusty Burrell and National Sargeant at Arms Frank Miller, who reside in Orlando, Fla., were unopposed.

"We fought hard for our issues," said Dunham. "In the final analysis, we all want the same things. It's time for us all to come together and take our union in a new direction."

The new board representing the Central, Eastern and Western regions of the United States, will be composed of 67 members, including the seven National Officers. The classifications of Directors of Photography and Visual Effects Supervisors, Camera Operators, and Camera Assistants represent 30 percent each of the membership on the camera side of the Local; Still Photographers, Digital Imaging and Associated Crafts represent the remaining 10 percent.

This marked the first election in which Publicists ran for office since the Publicists Guild merged with the ICG in January 2001. Four publicists were elected to serve on the National Board. They are Henri Bollinger, Jess Garcia, Fran Zell and Katherine Orloff.

Separate ballots for the IATSE Delegates election have been mailed to members and are due to be counted on May 25.
