JOEL DEUTSCH: KILLING TIME
Joel
Deutsch is originally from San Diego, California, where his interest
in filmmaking developed when he developed interests in theater, lighting
design and still photography in high school. That led him to dabbling
in video production for local TV shows. Deutsch honed his skills in film
school at San Diego State University. After graduating in 2000, he moved
to Hollywood, where he worked as an assistant cameraman on independent
features and commercials. Deutsch shot the Super 16 horror genre feature
titled Joshua. He has recently been operating cameras for the TV shows
Jimmy Kimmel Live, American Idol and VH1 Rock Honors. Deutsch also shot
music videos for Coheed and Cambria's top 10-rock music video Welcome
Home.
Killing
Time is a story, told in real time, about an unhappily married woman
and her naive lover who plot to murder her abusive husband. Their plan
completely unravels, and they soon find themselves trapped by their own
ill-conceived scheme. Preproduction involved shooting video animatics
to come up with a concise plan for the scheduled three-day shoot. Director
Tyler Spangler and Deutsch designed each shot, inventing their shooting
style along the way. Half of the film takes place under a car. Deutsch
used a periscope to get the shots he needed at ground level. He set up
one shot using the periscope in a unique manner by loosening the locking
ring mechanisms, allowing him to twist the periscope tube from camera
right facing position to upward position. This visually created the effect
of a moving transition between two shots, all from the ground perspective.
