The Passage of Mrs. CalabashThe Passage of Mrs. Calabash tells the story of a retired astrophysics professor and a troubled gas station proprietress who share stories of love and loss aboard an overnight train journey. In order to keep the focus on the performances, Hertzog designed the lighting and camera movement to be organic and unobtrusive. He opted to mix both traditional poor man's process and modern digital rear projection in order to keep everything in camera and avoid digital effects work. The filmmakers chose a low-contrast, low-color film stock to complement their design palette. The Passage of Mrs. Calabash has played at numerous film festivals around the world, earning several top awards.
