DAN HERTZOG: THE PASSAGE OF
MRS. CALABASH
Dan
Hertzog graduated from the University of Southern California in May 1991
with a bachelor's in Cinema-Television Production. He worked his way
up from a production assistant in Los Angeles to ad agency producer in
New York City. While producing television commercials, he also occasionally
worked as a director/cameraman. After more than 10 years in advertising,
Hertzog decided to earn a master's in cinematography from the American
Film Institute in December 2004. He is currently in preproduction on
the World War II romantic drama, Seed of Contention, to be filmed in
the Philippines.
The
Passage of Mrs. Calabash tells the story of a retired astrophysics professor
and a troubled gas station proprietress who share stories of love and
loss aboard an overnight train journey. In order to keep the focus on
the performances, Hertzog designed the lighting and camera movement to
be organic and unobtrusive. He opted to mix both traditional poor man's
process and modern digital rear projection in order to keep everything
in camera and avoid digital effects work. The filmmakers chose a low-contrast,
low-color film stock to complement their design palette. The Passage
of Mrs. Calabash has played at numerous film festivals around the world,
earning several top awards.
