A standing-room only crowd of more than 600 Guild members, directors, writers, actors, journalists and film enthusiasts gathered at the DGA Theatre in Hollywood on Apr. 27 for the World Premiere of the Seventh Annual ICG Short Film Festival.

After being greeted warmly in LA, the Kodak-sponsored Showcase is off to the Cannes Film Festival where each of the films will be screened on May 20 from 8-10 pm at the Bory Theatre. Kodak is hosting a reception immediately following in L’Appartment Kodak in the International Village.

The world tour resumes in the United States on May 31 in New York with subsequent screenings in Boston, Chicago, Orlando, Miami, San Francisco and Dallas. The NY screening will be held at the DGA Theatre (110 W. 57th Street) at 10 am. To attend, please RSVP to (212) 631-3464

“Our Short Film Festival is a celebration of the rich language and infinite possibilities of our craft,” said Guild President George Spiro Dibie, ASC. “Every one of our members who submitted a film for the competition has demonstrated their own unique talent and their passion for our art form.”

This year’s finalists are:

Festival Chairman Rob Kositchek noted that the event has done much to educate the Hollywood community and the press on the value of cinematography. “One of our mains goals has been to raise the awareness of the considerable talent and professionalism of our membership. We are succeeding in that effort,” he said.

The competition is open to all ICG members who are still photographers, film loaders, assistants and operators. Entries must be 30 minutes or less. There were some 65 entries that were evaluated by how artfully the scripts and performances were translated into moving images that serve the stories.

“It was an incredibly difficult decision,” says Russ Alsobrook, ASC, one of the judges. “The final nine films are extraordinary. You aren’t going to see better films or displays of talent at any festival. This is also a great showcase for the writers, directors, actors and everyone else who was involved in creating these films.”

Kositchek added that the festival itself is only a small sampling of the artistic aptitude of the Guild’s ranks. “My only regret is that we lack the time to exhibit more of their wonderful work.”
