AFL-CIO to Spend Record Amount in Election to Defend Middle Class

Leaders of the AFL-CIO are planning to wage an unprecedented campaign to get more Democrats into Congress and fight back the Republican attacks on the middle class.

AFL-CIO leaders announced on Feb. 27 that the organization will spend a record $40 million on the campaign to oust Republicans in the midterm elections.

“The 2006 elections present a crucial opportunity for working people at a time when our country is at a tipping point,” the AFL-CIO’s leaders said in a resolution. “In the House and the Senate, the opportunity exists to wrest control from the radically antiworker majorities that control both bodies.

With Republicans mired in corruption scandals, the labor organization is hoping to make gains in 15 Senate races and 40 House races and governors races in California, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
