“ICON is a portable, direct-to-disc field recorder for uncompressed acquisition from digital cinema cameras,” explains Drew Harding, Director of Business Development for Colorspace. This 4:4:4: or dual 4:2:2 recorder, designed to support both 2k and 4k cameras, is a universal capture device for all professional camera systems and is just out of R and D.

Over the past three years, Colorspace has worked with filmmakers to develop this new system. “Most unique about this system is the compact form factor,” adds Harding. “It is solid metal for ruggedization in extreme environments and situations, weighs less than 10 lbs. and is compact at 11” x 10” x 4”. Coupled with battery powered operation, it is ultra-portable for on-board or Steadicam with cameras such as Sony’s F23, ARRI’s D20, Thompson Grass Valley’s Viper and others.

“Colorspace is approaching digital acquisition with an innovative compact design,” says Rufus Burnham, President/CEO of Camera House. “The unique feature set and form factor of the icon will allow cinematographers to concentrate on creating beautiful images instead of dealing with complications of digital capture.”

“ICON is designed to replace traditional tape decks for on set capture,” Harding continues. “It captures directly to hard disk or solid state removable media packs for completely data-centric workflow. Media packs range in size and recording length from 256gb to 1 lb, - 15-50 minutes of 1080p 4:4:4 uncompressed footage. A 30-second internal cache allows for hot-swapping of media packs to increase recording length without losing data.”
